Charges for failing to comply with a direction issued by CPE to refund or place out students, as well as for providing false information, were filed against Ms Pek Siew Gek and Mr Tang Yudong.
The Council for Private Education (CPE) has filed charges with the Magistrate’s Court against Ms Pek Siew Gek and Mr Tang Yudong, two former managers of Kings International Business School (KIBS).
In a media release on Wednesday (Jun 1), the council said the charges were for failing to comply with a direction issued by CPE to refund or place out students, and for providing of false information.
If convicted, the two former managers could each face a jail term of up to 12 months, or a fine of at least S$5,000.
The CPE reiterated that it will not hesitate to take errant operators to task should they contravene the Private Education Act and its Regulations, and will continue to “monitor the industry closely through unannounced inspections to ensure compliance”.
KIBS was ordered to stop conducting courses in April last year after the CPE said it investigated and found evidence that the private business school had “offered and awarded some students with diplomas in maritime studies without requiring class attendance or assessment”.
It was also ordered to refund students outstanding fees or help arrange for them to continue their course at another private education institution by May 5 last year, when its registration was cancelled.
At the time, Ms Pek said the school planned to appeal the case and request for an extension of the deadline. However, the appeal was unsuccessful.
This was the first time a private education institution (PEI) had its registration cancelled for issuing diplomas without ensuring that students had received proper instruction and assessment.
Another PEI, Stamford Raffles College, had its registration cancelled in July 2015 for failing to have premises that conformed with regulations.
